In the past few decades, the public transportation ecosystem of a nation has come to be considered a more scalable measure of that country’s development in more ways than one. While transportation has a critical role to play in keeping Qatar moving every day, it does have a significant environmental impact that brings several challenges to the forefront.

As Qatar’s largest public transportation services provider, Mowasalat has recognized these challenges and continues to lead the way in adopting green transport practices that reduce our environmental footprint. Here’s an insight into some of our eco-initiatives that contribute towards creating a greener economy and a far more sustainable environment:

CO2 Reduction worth 4.6 million kg in 2022

In our mission to transition to sustainable modes of transportation, we have 880+ electric buses in our fleet and on the road that offer public transportation, school transportation, and event transportation services. These are battery-powered buses, well-supported by the fully-equipped charging stations

we have installed at various depots in Qatar. In particular the Lusail Bus Depot with more than 478 charging stations and 4 pantographs that facilitate fast-charging. Operated by Mowasalat, it happens to hold the Guinness World Record for being the World’s Largest Electric Bus Depot. Leading the charge in reducing CO2 emissions, it is our investments in green technologies that have enabled us to scale this

number – 4.6 million kg per year, which is equivalent to planting 33,755 trees.

27% Reduction in Water Consumption 2022

Water recycled is water saved. It is a precious resource that needs to be used wisely and efficiently. We can proudly say that we have reduced our freshwater consumption by 27% in

2022 as compared to 2021 through various efforts and initiatives. The major contribution to this achievement comes from the recycling of water used at our vehicle washing facilities. While our facilities reuse water for the purpose of washing buses, taxis, and limousines, they also lead by example in raising awareness about recycling water.

21% More Energy Savings in 2022

Energy savings have a huge role to play today in creating a sustainable tomorrow. The consumption of electricity, in particular, needs to be responsible and sparing. With immaculate planning and smart investments into our infrastructure, Mowasalat has reduced its electricity consumption by 21% in 2022 compared to 2021, which converts to one-fifth more energy savings. The installation of energy-efficient equipment and fixtures such as AC units, outdoor lighting timers, motion sensors, LED lights, etc, at multiple sites and facilities has emerged as a major contributing factor to that end. Decreasing greenhouse gas emissions and further supporting a green economy in so doing.

Green transportation has its foundation in strategizing the consumption of oil, precisely by extending the lifespan of oil through recycled products. Through strategic partnerships with recycling companies, Mowasalat has put in place oil recycling and reuse programs. We are able to produce reusable petroleum products such as SN2500, SN300, and fuel oil, thanks to our partnerships. Thus, enabling the prevention of environmental contamination while also conserving natural resources. Recycling such a significant amount of oil amounts to being one of our key sustainability initiatives.

8,753 Tires Reused in 2022

Embracing the principles of a circular economy, our implementation of a comprehensive tire recycling program is instrumental in reducing waste, minimizing the environmental impact of waste rubber, and promoting resource efficiency. We recognized the environmental hazards of improperly disposed tires early, and have partnered with specialized recycling contractors to ensure that the used tires from our fleets are transformed into valuable resources, such as building materials, rubberized asphalt, or alternative fuels. This approach has contributed to avoiding 340+ tons of rubber scrap at landfills.

1,600 Trees Planted in 2022

Recognizing the pivotal role of trees in combating climate change, we have undertaken tree plantation initiatives at various Mowasalat locations such as Karwa City. The planting of 1,600 trees in 2022 has the potential for generating 1,87,200 kg of Oxygen per year. While this helps create urban green spaces to provide shade, improve air quality, and mitigate the urban heat island effect, it also beautifies the areas and absorbs CO2 emissions from vehicles.

Championing Green Transport Practices

Mowasalat’s eco-initiatives are not just standalone efforts; they are interconnected and support each other, fostering a circular economy where resources are used efficiently, and waste is minimized. For a greener tomorrow, we need to act together and along the way we have developed key partnerships with sector-wide organizations and contractors for the purposes of research, recycling, and reuse, supporting our vision for green transportation. To that end, we are well-aligned with Qatar’s vision for a green economy that balances economic growth with environmental preservation and sustainability.

We move smart to make a difference for our planet!
